John Joseph O’Leary, Jr.

John Joseph O‘Leary, Jr., 86, died on July 14, 2023, in Hillsborough, NC, after a long battle with vascular Parkinsonism. Born in Natick, MA to John Joseph “Jack” O’Leary and Katherine M. Foley O’Leary, John grew up in Medfield, MA, experiencing as a child the 40’s of World War II and as a teenager the seemingly idyllic 50’s. He was involved in many activities at Medfield Highschool, graduating in 1954 as Senior Class President. After 4 years in an Army helicopter detachment in Germany, he returned to earn a degree in American Civilization from Brandeis University. He had a 16-year career in NYC in marketing and advertising, then operated his own business based in western Massachusetts. He served on the Board of Selectman in Blandford, MA. Retiring to North Carolina in 1995, he occasionally did copywriting and technical writing. He was predeceased by his parents and half-brother Michael Foley of Melbourne, Australia. He is survived by his partner of 26 years Patricia Weigant, of the home; niece Cecilia (Seal) Foley (John) O’Halloran and their children Annie and Sarah of Perth, Australia; niece Louise Foley (Barry) Mate and nephew Brendan (Nelly) Foley and son Dermot of Melbourne, Australia; and many cousins in New England and Ireland. Interment of John’s ashes will occur in the autumn in Medfield.
