Barbara Parks Mitchell

Barbara Parks Mitchell, 82, passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2026 surrounded by her family.
Barbara loved the Lord and trusted Him throughout her life. Her faith was the foundation of who she was—quiet, steady, and sincere. She believed in prayer, found strength in God’s Word, and lived with a heart centered on love, humility, and grace. Those who knew her were comforted by her presence and encouraged by her unwavering trust in God.
She was a woman who loved God, loved her family, and lived with quiet dignity and grace. Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing that her earthly journey is complete and that she now rests in the peace and presence of the Lord she loved.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Parks and Effie Herring, and two nephews, Harvey Kent, Jr. and Anthony Kent.
She was a proud and devoted mother. She is survived by her three children: her eldest son, Marcus “Miguel” Mitchell (Trena) of Morrisville, NC; her only daughter, Gecolia “Chelle” Sutton (Joshua) of Newport News, VA; and her youngest son, Clifton “Champ” Mitchell (Rachelle) of Goldsboro, NC. She loved her children wholeheartedly and prayed over them faithfully, finding joy in their lives and accomplishments.
She was a loving grandmother to Genesis and Destiny Mitchell of Cary, NC; Quanesha Murriell of Newport News, VA; Tayshie (TJ) (Tiara, Tayshie Jr.) Mitchell of Goldsboro, NC; Malachi, Trez’re, Anay’lah Mitchell, all of Goldsboro, NC. Her grandchildren were a great source of joy, and she delighted in each one, offering love, encouragement, and gentle wisdom.
Barbara is also survived by her baby sister, Betty Kent of Atlanta, GA; her uncle Joseph Herring (Leyda) of Arizona and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who were blessed by her kindness, warmth, and loving spirit and whom she loved dearly.
