Betty Ann Morton Winston

Oxford, North Carolina

Age 83.
Died 02/08/2022.

Betty Ann Morton Winston
Betty Ann Morton Winston 83, of Cornwall, passed away at home on February 8, 2022 from sepsis following a complicated surgery and brief illness. She was surrounded by family.

The second of three children, she was born in Oxford to the late G. Royster Morton and Alma Cole Morton on July 27th, 1938. She grew up in South Boston, Virginia and married the love of her life, Alexander Gayle Winston, Sr., on April 27th, 1956 in South Boston. Together they raised four children between Ashland, Virginia and North Carolina before settling back home in the Cornwall Community in 1971 where they became members of Grassy Creek Baptist Church. Ann was a stay at home mom, an assistant teacher, and co-owner of Carolina Crafters in Oxford, NC before starting her final career at a local bank. When Alex and Ann’s oldest daughter began showing signs of Friedrich’s Ataxia, Ann served as Cindy’s primary caregiver while continuing to work for as long as possible. After retirement, she provided daycare for her two youngest grandsons and later, she cared for her husband when his health declined.

Locally, Ann and Alex are remembered for their custom-built train for the Grassy Creek Christmas Parade and their Haunted Trail through the woods at their home. Ann enjoyed gardening and built up an impressive collection of various plants throughout their property and in their greenhouse. Ann loved her family dearly and fought valiantly until the very end to spend as much time with them as possible, defying all odds.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Royster and Alma Morton, a brother, Gerald Thomas Morton, a daughter Cynthia Leigh Winston, two sisters-in-law; Gwen and Elizabeth Winston, and a nephew, Brian Keith Morton.

She is survived by her sister, Mary-Leigh Osborne, her son, Alexander Winston, Jr, (Jessica), her daughters, Gayle Glass (John) and Jeannette Averett (Dan), three brothers-in-law: Pratt (JoAn), Tommy, and Bobby (Lynda) Winston, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a niece, nephew, and grand-nieces and nephew as dear to her as her grandchildren.

Cremation services will be handled by City of Oaks Funeral Home & Cremations of Raleigh. A visitation will be held at Grassy Creek Baptist Church in Bullock, NC on Saturday February 12 at 1 P.M. followed by a memorial service at 2 P.M. Attendees are invited for fellowship and refreshments at the Winston Home in Cornwall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grassy Creek Baptist Church, 9142 Grassy Creek Road, Bullock, NC 27507.

Immediate Burial

$2497.50

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.

icon
Traditional Funeral

$5866.98

We offer the same traditional funeral services as the big corporately owned funeral homes in the area; however, we cost about half the amount. You might consider a traditional funeral service if your family is looking for an open casket visitation, a traditional church service or a funeral service in the funeral home's chapel. A traditional funeral service can be altered to fit the needs of your family.

Green Burial

$3033.75

This establishment is one of a select number of funeral homes who meet the criteria for providing green funeral service by the Green Burial Council; a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainability in the field of funeral service. Our Green options allow for a funeral to take place without the use of toxic and non-biodegradable materials/chemicals.

Aquamation

$2640.59

As an alternative to traditional cremation, City of Oaks Funeral Home also offers Aquamation. The Aquamation process, often referred to as alkaline hydrolysis, uses a solution of water and potassium hydroxide to facilitate natural decomposition.
