James Carrino

James Joseph Carrino, 82, passed away on March 3, 2023 after a brief illness.

Jim was born on January 23, 1941 to Anthony and Mabel Carrino and raised in the New York City borough of Manhattan in the neighborhood of Yorkville. As a child, he was a choir boy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

He attended St. Ann's Academy, which was later re-named Archbishop Molloy. He excelled in basketball as a guard on the undefeated Catholic High School national championship basketball team in his senior season (1957) and was a well sought after recruit, which gave him the flexibility to attend the college of his choice.

Jim attended Georgetown University on scholarship and was a member of the varsity basketball team from 1959-1962. He graduated with a A.B. in Philosophy in 1962. He remembered his years “on the hilltop” fondly and he remained close to his college friends and teammates for the rest of his life.

Jim continued his basketball career during a brief stint in the U.S. Navy, stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base. He was a member of the All-Navy team, the All-Armed Forces team and he was proud to have represented his country in the 1964 basketball Olympic Trials.

Jim married the former Judith R. Kennedy, of Charleston, W.V., on July 2, 1964 and they enjoyed nearly 59 years of marriage. Together, they welcomed three children, Darren Carrino, of Greensboro, N.C., Shannon Orwin and Aliza Johnson, both of Cary, N.C. Jim is also survived by his brother Gerald, and sister-in-law Gail, of Cleveland, OH, and grandchildren, James, Jessica, Jordan and Julianna Crowell and Emily and Grace Carrino.

Jim was a man of strong wit and intellect and even stronger faith. He enjoyed watching college basketball (especially his Hoyas), traveling, collecting smoking pipes, debating religious matters and politics (he moderated over the years), keeping in touch with friends from near and far (several of whom have been close friends since grade school) and, most of all, being a loving and spirited son, brother, husband, father and papa.

While he achieved success in business and basketball, nothing gave Jim more pride and joy than his family.

A Funeral Mass is planned at noon on March 31, 2023 at Mother Teresa Catholic Church in Cary, N.C. with a reception to follow at Bradford Hall (Carolina Preserve).
