Mary Joan "Mo" Flaherty, 72, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on March 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 26, 1953, in Somersville, CT, to the late Valda and Leo O'Kanos, Mary was a woman whose bright smile and welcoming spirit touched everyone who knew her.

Mary earned her bachelor's degree in business administration and went on to build a dedicated career with the state of Connecticut, retiring after more than 20 years of service. In 2015, she made the move to Raleigh, NC, where she quickly planted roots and found new ways to give back. She volunteered at the Wake County SPCA, often alongside her beloved granddaughter, Reilynn, sharing her deep love of animals with the next generation. Mary also volunteered with the Summit Church Kids Program, pouring her heart into the children there.

Mary loved the shore and spent many happy days sponsoring sea turtle nests along the coast. Every year, she and her good friend Nancy made their way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a tradition she cherished. Whether she was at the beach, caring for animals, or greeting someone with that signature warmth, Mo had a gift for making people feel at home.

A devoted member of the Summit Church, Mary lived her faith fully and joyfully, trusting in God's promises and finding peace in His grace.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Flaherty; her brother, Charles O'Kanos; and her granddaughter, Reilynn Mary Mentz. She is survived by her son, Kevin Flaherty; her daughter, Erin Flaherty Mentz; and her brother, Roy O'Kanos.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at the Summit Church in Raleigh, NC, on April 25th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wake County SPCA in Mary's memory.
