David S. Thompson, 61, Durham, North Carolina

David S. Thompson, 61, of Durham, passed away surrounded by the community he loved so dearly.

Born with a natural gift for connection and conversation, David completed his education at Charles E. Jordan High School in 1985. Shortly after, he began his lifelong career with Durham Exchange Club Industries (DECI), where he worked faithfully for 40 plus years. His dedication, strong work ethic, and friendly spirit made a lasting impact on colleagues and friends alike.

An avid fan of aviation and sports, as well as a passionate golfer, David rarely missed an opportunity to go to the airport to watch the planes, cheer on his favorite teams or spend a day on the golf course. More than anything, he loved people. He truly never met a stranger. Whether at a game, on the green, or simply out around town, David was always ready with a smile, a handshake, and a story.

His brother John often referred to him as the “unofficial mayor” of Durham, a title that fit perfectly. David seemed to know everyone everywhere he went, and if he didn’t, he would make a friend quickly. His warmth and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

David is survived by his sister, Marianna Kilbride of New Canaan, Connecticut, and her husband Rick and children Anna, Elizabeth, and Charlotte; his brother John Thompson of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and his wife Laura and children Andrew, Jackson, and Walker. He was a proud and loving uncle who cherished his family deeply.

David’s life was defined by kindness, loyalty, and community. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his unwavering friendliness, and his consistent loyalty. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, coworkers.
