Julio Vargas

Julio Roman Vargas, 79, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026.

Born in Lima, Peru, Julio came to the United States as a young man and built a life centered on family. He was a devoted father to his three daughters, Christine Edwards, Cheri Kohan, and Whitney Vargas, and is also survived by his sons-in-law, Gary Kohan Jr. and Brian Dobosh.

Julio served 20 years in the United States military, including service during the Vietnam War, a chapter he carried with pride. He later worked in hospital administration, continuing his commitment to helping others.

He had a deep love for soccer, both as a player in his younger years and as a lifelong fan, reflecting his enduring pride in his Peruvian heritage. He was also a lifelong, devoted Washington football fan, following the team with unwavering loyalty. He had a creative spirit and a love of art and music, along with a curiosity for history, and took great pride in the collections he built over the years, including sports memorabilia, military figurines, and coins.

Julio was known for his sharp, understated sense of humor, often delivering perfectly timed remarks that caught people off guard and brought lightness to everyday moments.

He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren: Gary Kohan III; Lauren Kohan and her husband, Jordan Whitaker; Ryan Edwards; Haylee Stancill and her husband, Dylan Stancill; Emily Edwards; Jacob Edwards; Hannah Dobosh; Madison Dobosh; and Reagan Dobosh.

He is also survived by his brother, Jose “Pepe” Teodoro Vargas Pertuza, as well as beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fidela and Jose, and his brother, Emilio. His family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace and reunited with them.
