Tony Ray Matthews, 66, of Lillington, North Carolina, passed away on June 14, 2026.

Born on December 10, 1959, Tony was known for his strong work ethic and quick sense of humor. He enjoyed sharing a laugh, telling stories, and living life to the fullest. Throughout his life he worked in a variety of trades, including sheetrock, landscaping, and construction. However, some of his proudest moments came later in life through his recovery journey and service to others.

Tony was given a second chance at life through recovery, successfully completing the TROSA program and later remaining on staff, helping others as they worked toward recovery and stability. The experience profoundly impacted him and inspired a passion for supporting those facing similar struggles. He later spent years with Hope Through Housing, dedicating himself to helping individuals find recovery, housing, and a fresh start. His willingness to encourage others and share his experiences touched countless lives.

Though Tony faced challenges of his own, he was always willing to lend a hand to others and encourage them to seek a better path. He was very proud of his daughters and rarely missed an opportunity to speak of them.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Janie and Pete Green, and by his father, Ray Matthews.

Tony is survived by his daughters, Holly Williams and Heather Johnson; his grandchildren, Adalyn Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Henry Williams, and Harper Taylor, all of Fuquay-Varina; and his brother, Marshall Matthews of Lillington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Tony Ray Matthews to TROSA. Donations may be made online through TROSA’s donation page at www.trosainc.org.

The family appreciates the thoughts, prayers, and support extended during this difficult time.
