Russell King

CAPE CARTERET - Russell “Rusty” Marcus King, age 64, of Cape Carteret, North Carolina, passed peacefully on January 12, 2024, after a lengthy illness.
Rusty was born in Petersburg, VA, the son of Russell and Peggy (Slater) King. He grew up in Matoaca, VA and attended Matoaca High School. Rusty spent his school breaks/summers on the NC coast, working on commercial shrimp boats, with family. He later pursued work in the Power Plant industry, commercial and residential construction, and commercial fishing.
An outdoor enthusiast, Rusty enjoyed the woods and rivers of Virginia, hunting and fishing at every opportunity, as both a youth and adult. As retirement approached, he decided to relocate to the NC coast, to the fishing communities he knew so well. Rusty reacquainted with old friends in the area, and quickly added more. He never met a stranger!
In recent months, Rusty was a patient in the ECU Health Duplin Hospital, where he was embraced and adopted by the Nurses and staff of the 2nd Floor North Nurses’ station. Those folks took excellent care of “Pap” - he loved and appreciated each one.
Survivors include his sisters, Rhonda, Donna and Linda of Virginia; Cousins Danny King (Wilmington, NC), Joni King Brooks (Emerald Isle, NC), and Susie King Langham (Jacksonville, NC); close friend Susan, and companion Miss Jo (Cape Carteret, NC.) Rusty was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Ronny “Bugger Red” King and beloved Uncle Harold King.
The family would like to acknowledge our appreciation for the excellent care provided by the staff of ECU Health Duplin Hospital, ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, and Gentiva Hospice.
