Calvin was born in Raleigh, NC to the late Calvin Matthew Lanier Sr. and Effie Estelle Hammie Lanier. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (Fredrick Douglas and Michael Terry Lanier), and sister (Sharon Faye Lanier).

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 52 years Louise Lanier, his 3 daughters- Felisha Fussell (Anthony), Trina Winston (Anthony), and Jobina Lanier, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren, a sister- Vanessa Norwood, a sister-in-law -Sharon Jiles (Steve), a brother-in-law -Alex Dowling (Doretha), and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
