Veronica "Bonnie" Mooney
Cary, North Carolina
Age 93.
Died 02/21/2026.
Bonnie, as she was known to all, was born July 13, 1932 to George Washington Volker and Veronica Thomas Volker and raised in the section of Philadelphia, PA now referred to as Paradise, then known as Swampoodle.
She was the beloved mother of 7 children.
Bonnie attended Corpus Christi Parochial School and Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School in Philadelphia. Her children were incredulous that her high school's official mascot was Mickey Mouse. Bonnie would continue to attend her grade school and high school reunions into the 1990’s and on her return home would always comment that everyone else seemed so old.
After graduating from school, Bonnie worked as a secretary at Chevrolet Motor Division and had a stint in modeling—just long enough to decide she either wanted to become a nun, or have many children. She met and married Ed Mooney and they started a family at the “late” age of 30 and continued until a doctor ordered them to stop. Then, with reckless abandon, they had one more after a trip to Acapulco (Robert). After years in Yardley and Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Ed’s career moved them to Cary, NC in 1980. The migration from Pennsylvania was initially a culture shock but after making great friends through the MacGregor Downs Thursday Girls social group and becoming active members with St. Michael’s parish, she never regretted the move. Ed and Bonnie were also founding members of St Andrew the Apostle Parish in Apex, where she found great fulfillment and purpose visiting the homebound as a eucharistic minister.
Although her faith was tested early with the loss of her infant daughter and then the work of raising 6 subsequent children, Bonnie was a sweetheart and person of great spirit and determined positivity. She had the patience of a saint. Bonnie always worked to see the best in others but she was no pushover. Pity the airline executive, Fresh Market manager, McDonalds soft-serve tech, or the schoolmate of her children who (allegedly) failed to return a borrowed sleeping bag after a graduation party some 40-years ago (Billy Warden), who would face the tenacity of her telephone and letter writing campaign, no doubt sharing her status as a Nationsbank Deluxe Banker and seeking redress to the problem.
She was tough. She once slipped on ice and didn’t realize she’d broken her arm until she visited a doctor a week later when the pain hadn’t subsided. After suffering a serious aortic rupture in the night, she waited until waking hours to call her children, leading the calls with an apology for the bother and when instructed to immediately call 911, wouldn’t open the door for the EMTs until properly attired.
Bonnie had great poise and personality and never met a stranger—even if the new friend might have been looking forward to sleeping on their flight. She had exquisite cursive penmanship and even simple school excuse notes to the principal were so formally composed they could have been mistaken for a request to royalty; they could not be counterfeited.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Glenaire retirement community. Glenaire cared for her from Independent Living, through Skilled Nursing and Hospice. Bonnie developed dementia in the last years of her life and a Glenaire nurse noted that she was never volatile, or negative. Instead, it seemed every 30 seconds she was rediscovering anew that everything is great.
Bonnie kept her childhood catechism book about the lives of Saints and tried to emulate their best qualities throughout her life. She also admired Dorothy Day, who said: "Love, and ever more love, is the only solution to every problem that comes up."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward James Mooney and infant daughter Bernadette, and brothers George and Tom Volker. She is survived by her daughters Regina Trease (Steve Trease), Mary Pat Calvert (James Calvert), and Kathleen Mooney (Matthew McClain) and her sons Bill Mooney (Jennifer Godbold), Ted Mooney (Eve Brown), and Robert Mooney (Kyra Mooney). She is the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren: Andrew, Patrick, Jack, and Anna Claire Trease; Oscar Mooney and Floyd Jones; Lachlan and McCallum Calvert; Eloise and Sammy McClain; Joe, Stella, and Agnes Mooney.
A visitation is scheduled at St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, Apex, NC on Friday March 13th at 10:00 AM with Catholic Mass following at 10:45 AM.
In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution to St. Andrew Catholic Church and list “St. Vincent DePaul Society” in the memo line or Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral and "Walking With Moms in Need" listed in the Memo Line.

City of Oaks Funeral Home and Cremation provides an affordable cremation with a private family viewing. A private family viewing allows up to 10 immediate family members or friends to spend time with a loved one when a public visitation is not preferred.

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.
