Carol Durham

Durham, North Carolina

Age 92.
Died 03/31/2026.

Carol Durham
April 3, 1933 – March 31, 2026

Carol was born on April 3, 1933 in the small farming community of Macomb Illinois, to Grant and Kathryn Shanklin. She grew up among farmland and forests, in a home filled with steadiness, affection, and the unwavering belief that she could meet the world with confidence. That early foundation shaped everything that followed.
A natural leader even in grade school, Carol gravitated toward reading, writing, and ideas. She attended DePauw University, where she majored in English and discovered the grounding that comes from knowledge rather than recognition. She studied art, traveled to Europe, and deepened her understanding of the world beyond the Midwest.

During her college years, Carol met and married John Durham, a Korean War veteran. Together they raised three children—Michael, Lynn and Chris —who remained the center of her life. After graduating, Carol pursued graduate studies in psychology, driven not by a desire for authority but by a profound curiosity about the human mind. She spent many years working alongside a psychiatrist, listening to the stories of hospitalized patients and learning, as she often said, that “truth can be slippery, and people need encouragement more than anything else.”

Carol believed deeply in the power of unexpected kindness. She never forgot the neighbor who quietly gave her a check to help her travel to Europe as a young woman—an act that shaped her understanding of generosity for the rest of her life.

After her marriage ended, Carol embraced independence with grace and courage. She traveled widely—often internationally—seeking adventure, learning, and connection. She built a life defined by friendship, family, her beloved cat Sam, and the freedom to follow her own curiosity. She lived on her own terms, always.

Carol never boasted of achievements, though she touched countless lives through her work as a therapist.

She had a large presence in Ft Wayne Indiana where she lived most of her life. Active in the early stages of the Women’s Bureau, local theatre, First Presbyterian church and many charitable boards.

What she valued most was honesty—honesty with oneself, especially. She believed in facing life without illusion, in crying when needed, and in living fully even when life was difficult.

She is survived by her children, Michael Durham (Marie Durham), Lynn Durham (Dale Hedin), Chris Durham), her brother John Shanklin and two grandchildren Erin Durham, Alexis DeSpain, and by all those who were shaped by her kindness, her insight, and her quiet strength.

Carol’s life was a testament to curiosity, independence, and the transformative power of being truly seen.

She leaves behind a legacy not of grand gestures, but of steady encouragement, thoughtful presence, and a life lived with open eyes and an open heart.

Immediate Burial

$2497.50

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.

Traditional Funeral

$6081.48

We offer the same traditional funeral services as the big corporately owned funeral homes in the area; however, we cost about half the amount. You might consider a traditional funeral service if your family is looking for an open casket visitation, a traditional church service or a funeral service in the funeral home's chapel. A traditional funeral service can be altered to fit the needs of your family.
