Billy Womble Harrington

Billy Womble Harrington was born in Sanford, NC on October 3, 1928, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 21, 2022. Billy was born to parents John Vann Harrington and Nannie Ila Womble. Billy was one of ten children, a farmer, and a US Army veteran. Billy was signed to a professional baseball contract by the legendary Connie Mack right out of high school. Billy played several years in and out of the big leagues, pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics then Kansas City Athletics. In 1958 Billy was the most valuable player with the Birmingham Barrons in the Southern Association winning 20 games that year.
Billy retired from baseball and settled in Garner, NC with his wife, Margaret Holcomb Harrington, and worked as a police officer for NC State Capital Police. Billy was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Billy loved riding horses and helping his community. He operated a children's barnyard for several years called Mr. Bill's Barnyard,
He is survived by his eldest son William Edward Harrington (Billy), wife Peggy, granddaughter Melaina Harrington Whitehead and husband Scott, Great-granddaughter Scotlyn, and grandson Cody Harrington. He is survived by his youngest son Thomas Greg Harrington, wife Karen, grandson Chad Harrington, wife Brittany, Great-grandsons Landon and Grayson, granddaughter Sarah Harrington Templeton and husband David, and granddaughter Hope Harrington. Billy is survived by his sister Becky Terry, and multiple nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life service at Shiloh Baptist Church, 3414 N Shiloh Road, Garner, NC 27529 on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM. In place of Flowers, the family requests donations are made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
