Carroll Shaw Whitney

Carroll to most - Coo, Rho, hon (by her husband Fred), Aunt Carroll, mom, and grandma to others - passed away at her home in Raleigh, NC on September 7, 2026. To say she had a loving circle of people around her would be an understatement. Carroll cared so deeply for the people around her, and they loved, cared and supported her to the end.

Carroll was born in Fairmont, West Virginia with a wonderful mother, Rhoda Carroll and two older brothers Michael and Tim who loved her to the moon. She spent her childhood with her brothers and cousins, Ike and Dane, all over the mountains, parks, and rivers of West Virginia. She attended West Virginia University in Morgantown for her undergrad and received an Ed.D at NC State University. She began her career in Washington DC and then moved to Raleigh where she built, in partnership, OTD, Inc. providing organizational training, strategy and development to organizations and local government. She then moved to GlaxoSmithKline as VP of Training & Development and built a second organizational development firm, rounding out a successful career building adaptable, effective company cultures.

Carroll was a devoted mother to Tim Whitney and Sarah Ridout, and grandmother to six who were her absolute pride and joy. She loved how all of her grandchildren were so different and had special relationships with each of them.

Carroll was preceded in death by Fred Whitney, her loving husband. Fred and Carroll met and were married in Washington, DC. When Fred asked when do you want to get married, Carroll said "what about now?". They were married within six weeks and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before Fred passed away. Their life involved dancing in the kitchen; going to Eagles concerts; taking their kids to museums, helping them with a school project or getting ready for a dance; building strong businesses and partnerships; traveling the world; enjoying the waves in Carolina Beach; cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes and giving back to the community. After Fred's passing, Carroll continued a beautiful life where she helped, listened and loved. Carroll loved her friends and family so much. Please know how grateful our family is to each and every one of you.

Carroll is survived by children Tim, his wife Kate and their children Joe, Ben, Ryan and Elle;  Sarah, her husband Brock and their children Jonah and Ava. We will never forget the love mom/grandma brought to our lives.

Carroll will be celebrated on Saturday, September 26th at Vita Vite Midtown (200 Park at North Hills, Suite 130), her favorite spot, from 1:00-3:00pm.  Please join us to listen to her favorite music, look at photos, eat her favorite foods and celebrate the beautiful soul that she was. Donations to TROSA in her name are appreciated. It was one of her favorite places to volunteer.
