Charles Sparkman Godwin

Charles Sparkman Godwin, age 91, died September 29, 2022 in Raleigh, NC peacefully in his sleep.
He was born in Bertie County, NC, the son of Clayton S. and Elsie C. Godwin. He served in the US Air Force from 1951-1954 in Germany before returning to Ahoskie, NC where he met his future wife, Louise Byrd. He worked for Blue Cross & Blue Shield for several years, and then served with the State Capitol Police for over 20 years before retiring in 1996.
Charles was an outgoing person who enjoyed many activities with his family like fishing, boating, water skiing, golfing, and tennis. He and Louise were fond of traveling, often in their Volkswagen camper or RV. He enjoyed family reunions and flying his small Aircoupe with his Civil Air Patrol friends.
Charles is predeceased by his wife Louise. He is survived by his two daughters and their families: Blanche (Godwin) and Tracy Shelton of Cary, NC; and Lou Ann (Godwin) and Rick Avery of McKenney, VA. He cherished his five grandchildren: Abigail (Avery) and Cody Murgas, Andrew Avery, Alexandra Avery, Rachel Shelton and Brent Shelton.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at 1030 am at the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery, located about 1 mile north of McKenney, VA on US Highway 1. (The closest street address is 20720 Boydton Plank Road.) A Celebration of Life reception will take place from 11am to 4pm nearby at the home of Lou & Rick Avery, located at 5558 Lennie Road, McKenney, VA 23872.
