Delia H Owens
With heavy hearts yet enduring love, we celebrate the life of Delia Hart Owens, who departed this world on March 16, 2026. At the age of 86. Born on January 25, 1940, in Dexter, North Carolina. Delia peacefully transitioned at home in Stovall, North Carolina, surrounded by her beloved family after a courageous battle with illness. Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and dedication, a true embodiment of grace and strength.
Delia was the cherished daughter of Cooper and Helen Floyd Hart, and she was predeceased in death by her beloved husband SCPO Hammit Owens, her son Michael S. Owens and grandson Sean Ethan (Little Mike) Owens. Her journey through life was also shared with her siblings, Dorothy Currin, CSM Dennis O’Brian, Margaret Satterwhite, Roy C. Hart and Jean Averette, who have also preceded her in joining the eternal embrace.
Delia is survived by her siblings; Mary Helen Langham of Atlanta, Georgia and Frank Floyd Hart of Lewis Community, Oxford, North Carolina; her devoted children, John R. Owen and his wife Denise of Sumter, South Carolina; Rebecca Robbin Owens Newman of Chesapeake, Virginia; and Christopher M. Owens of Stovall, North Carolina. Her legacy continues with her grandchildren; Derek Owen (Allison), Danielle Owen, Kate Saunders (Bryan), Emily Newman, Fallon Owens, Shania Owens, Angel Owens, and Jacob Owens. Delia’s bright spirit will also live on in her great-grandchildren, including Ren Owen, Jack Saunders, Maggie Dee Saunders, Brooklyn Wade, Londyn Wade, Madison Wade, and Violet Winstead. She is fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law Rebecca (Becky) Owen and Margaret (Polly) Hart; numerous nieces and nephews and her life-long friend Gladys Higgins of Norfolk, Virginia.
As a Military (Navy) wife, Delia supported and followed her husband’s 23-year career to Texas, California, Washington, Scotland, District of Columbia and Virginia. Finally returning to Stovall in 1978. In her professional life, Delia was a dedicated School Food Service Culinarian for the Granville
County School District for 22 years, where she worked tirelessly to nourish the minds and bodies of countless students. She was also a charter member and EMT of the North Granville County Emergency Services in Stovall, reflecting her unwavering commitment to serving her community.
Delia’s faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was a proud member of the Stovall Baptist Church. She was also a member of the National and North Carolina Food Service Association. Her passion for cooking was not just a career, but a cherished hobby that brought joy and warmth to her family and friends, as well as the Oxford Baptist Church Wednesday Night Supper. She found great enjoyment in cheering on the UNC men’s and women’s basketball teams and the Atlanta Braves. Delia loved gardening, reading, lying by the pool and was always ready to challenge anyone to a game of scrabble.
A private funeral service will be later held at the Stovall Memorial Cemetery and a celebration of life ceremony will be conducted soon. The family expresses deep thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care and to family and friends for their visits and calls.
