​Edward Cornelius DeVente—known affectionately to friends and family as Ed, and to his grandchildren as Happy—passed away peacefully on Friday August 14th, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, strength, and joy.

​Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1939, Ed’s adventurous spirit showed itself early: he famously learned to walk aboard a boat as his family journeyed toward new horizons. Originally from Amsterdam, the DeVente family eventually made their home in the United States, where Ed embraced American life with characteristic optimism and drive.

​Ed built a distinguished 38-year career at IBM, where his integrity and work ethic earned him the lasting respect of colleagues and friends. Beyond his professional achievements, his family was his greatest pride. Alongside his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary, Ed raised three sons, instilling in them the core values and steady guidance they continue to live by today.

​To his many grandchildren, he was known simply as "Happy." It was more than a nickname—it was the word that best described the very essence of who he was. Ed brought light, laughter, and an unshakable positivity into every room he entered.

​While his family deeply misses his vibrant happiness, they are endlessly grateful for the incredible years shared together. Though Ed is no longer with us, his spirit endures—for everyone who loved him carries a piece of him that will always remain.
