Eve Keshen
born Patricia Keshen
March 22, 1930 – May 17, 2026

Eve Keshen, a long-time resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, (nee Patricia Keshen) was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Beatrice Silverman Keshen and Mack R. Keshen. She died at age 96 on May 17, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Eve graduated with honors from Pembroke College, the women’s college of Brown University, where she majored in philosophy and played field hockey. Following graduation, she married Joseph T. Freeman. They moved from New York City to Chapel Hill in 1969 and divorced in 1970. She reclaimed her maiden name, Keshen, and later legally changed her first name to Eve.

Eve earned a Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. She went on to spend nearly a decade as a caseworker in children’s protective services for the county Department of Social Services, advocating for vulnerable children and families in the community.

Eve was, above all, a person of relentless intellectual curiosity. She was a devoted student of American history and had a particular admiration for Abraham Lincoln, about whom she was deeply knowledgeable. Over the years she took classes at UNC as a continuing student across a wide range of departments—philosophy, American history, Japanese history—driven by nothing more than a desire to keep learning.

She was also an avid and adventurous traveler who visited countries throughout the world, often learning the rudiments of a language before her trips. She studied Swahili before a long trip to Kenya and studied Japanese with particular dedication. Her great love was Japan—its culture, its history, its gardens. She traveled there for extended trips more than twenty times over the course of her life. That passion found expression at home as well: she designed and cultivated Japanese gardens around her house bordering on the lake, where she lived for over six decades.

Eve loved dogs and always had one at her side, beginning with Flash, a border collie she got in 1970, and ending with “Little Dog,” a chihuahua. She cared deeply about animals, and much of her estate will go to organizations dedicated to their protection.

In April 2025, Eve broke her hip and had to leave her beloved house. In her last months she was looked after with devoted, loving attention by her caregivers Anita Brown, Beryl Rashid, and Shauna Tharp, and with extraordinary loving care by her daughter Jennifer.

She is survived by her daughters, Margot Freeman Saunders (Stephen) and Jennifer Freeman Bright (Charlie); four grandchildren, Gwendolyn Hoose, Jesse Bright, and Traci Pedraza, and Samuel Saunders; seven great-grandchildren, and her dear friend Barbara Smith.

No services are planned.

Immediate Burial

$2497.50

An immediate burial has the same end result as a traditional burial; however, we have eliminated the extra (sometimes unnecessary) services prior to getting to the cemetery. Not everyone wants an open casket for viewing or a limousine for the family. Despite the term immediate, we can move as fast as you need or as slow as you like. This option simply allows you to save money by eliminating some of the fancy extras at the funeral home.

Traditional Funeral

$6081.48

We offer the same traditional funeral services as the big corporately owned funeral homes in the area; however, we cost about half the amount. You might consider a traditional funeral service if your family is looking for an open casket visitation, a traditional church service or a funeral service in the funeral home's chapel. A traditional funeral service can be altered to fit the needs of your family.

Green Burial

$3033.75

This establishment is one of a select number of funeral homes who meet the criteria for providing green funeral service by the Green Burial Council; a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization working to encourage environmentally sustainability in the field of funeral service.
