In Loving Memory of

Frances "Fran" Laurene Swafford Black

Raleigh
,
North Carolina
Died:
July 10, 2022

Fran Black died peacefully at home at the age of 99 on July 10, 2022. She joyfully devoted her life to family, teaching, church, and volunteer service. Fran was passionate about reading and sharing ideas boldly, but without rancor. Throughout her thirty-year teaching career, Fran created a university atmosphere in her high school classroom.
After retiring, Fran redirected her energy into volunteer service with the local hospital, Meals on Wheels, and the clothing closet. Nothing interrupted her volunteer commitment other than traveling throughout the US, Canada, and once to Europe, with her beloved husband, Bob.
Fran adored every member of her family. Always open to new ideas and approaches to life, Fran remained constantly young at heart. Her love, wit, and wisdom were lavished on family and friends, ranging from folks in her generation to her seven-year-old great grandchild.
Fran was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-nine years, Robert S. Black. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Sansbury, grandchildren, Ren Randolph-Adams and Anna Randolph, grandson-in-law, Brad Randolph-Adams, and great grandchild, Max Randolph-Adams.
Fran’s memorial service will be held at Greystone Baptist Church, 7509 Leadmine Road, Raleigh, NC 27615 on July 23, 2022, at 11:00 am. Visitation will follow in the church Gathering Room. Masks are required at all times.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to either Meals on Wheels of Wake County (www.WakeMoW.org) or Read and Feed (www.ReadandFeed.org), an after-school literacy program that provides meals, tutoring, and books to children from low-income families in Wake County.
Fran’s family is very grateful for the skilled and compassionate care provided to her by countless team members from Transitions LifeCare Hospice, both for their care of Fran at her home and during her respite stay at the Hospice Home. Deep appreciation is also felt for the many acts of kindness from personal and business friends, plus members of Greystone Baptist Church.
