With heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Joseph McDermott, who left us on July 17, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on January 4, 1941, in Scranton Pennsylvania, James—affectionately known as Jim—was a man of immense intellect, creative talent, and above all, an unwavering devotion to his family.
After serving in the Navy, Jim was a pioneer in the early days of semiconductor design and helped shape the technology of the modern world. In retirement, he beautifully transitioned from engineering to art, becoming a fabulous painter who captured the world around him through stunning watercolor paintings.
Jim’s greatest masterpiece, however, was the love and care he poured into his family. He is now peacefully reunited with his beloved wife, Cathy Otto McDermott; his daughter, Deborah Harasti; his son, Michael McDermott; and his brother, Jack McDermott.
Jim’s legacy of kindness, creativity, and humor lives on through his surviving children: his son David McDermott and his wife Tammy; his daughter Dawn Smith and her husband Tom; and his son Daniel McDermott and his wife Steffanie. He is also survived by his nine cherished grandchildren: Michael, Joey, Jessica, Ryan, Chad, Samantha, Robyn, Aly, and Abby; and his loving sisters, Ann Barnes, Kathy Davis, and Karen Mamel, as well as many extended family members.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held on August 14th at 11am at St Andrew Church in Apex, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.
