Jennie Catherine Carroll, passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior after a long battle of dementia, 21 days before her 89th birthday at the Transitions Life Care in Raleigh.

Jennie was born to Robert Booker Dameron and Rosa Jackson Dameron in Cedar Creek NC on October 26, 1937. The family moved to Durham, where she went to school. She married, Gibson “Hoot” Smith, moved to Sanford and worked at Carnes Corporation as a sheet metal worker and receiving clerk. She also worked at various jobs cleaning houses, being a waitress, and helping family members. Jennie taught her children how to balance dedication to family while working hard outside of the home. She married Wayne Carroll and raised his two children as her own in Pembroke Pines, Florida. She moved back to Raleigh NC area for the remainder of her life. Jennie lived her last independent years at Chadwick Apartment in Garner.

Jennie loved life, always busy doing something for others. She loved the Lord and went to various churches in the area where she lived and visited. Loved spending time with family especially family events, going to the beach, listening to music, dancing, and walking miles a day enjoying sites and sounds.

Jennie is preceded in death by her son Gibson “Gibby” Smith, her parents, Robert and Rosa Dameron, her brothers Oren, Nick and Robert Dameron.

Jennie leaves behind her children Mark Smith (Cathy), Debra Roberts(Jeff), Alan Smith (Julie), John Ed Carroll, and Christie Carroll, Grandchildren Dawn Keaton (Zach), Brian Smith, Jennifer Owens (Justin), Frank Holt, Jamie Roberts, Adam Reed, Tiffany Wareh, Alana Hillard (Preston), and Julian Smith, Great-grandchildren Grace Keaton, Aubrey Keaton, Turner Owens, Isabella Holt, Bryson Holt, Jayden Wareh and Oliver Hillard, Sister Brenda Berry, many cousins, nieces, nephews and great friends. 

We would like to thank Total Learning Center, Gabriel Manor and Amedisys Hospice for her care the last few months. We would like to give a special thank you to the Wake Med Doctors and staff for her exceptional care in her last days, especially her nurses Tye, Bryanna and Chelsea. Thank you to Transitions Life Care for keeping her comfortable in last two days of life.

A memorial service to honor Jennie’s life will be held at Hollands Church, 9433 Ten Ten Road, Raleigh at 10:30 am. Burial service will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens, 2600 Hawkins Avenue, Sanford, NC at 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to organizations that supported her during her battle with dementia, Total Life Center, Garner, Amedisys Hospice, Garner, Transitions Life Care, Raleigh or a church of your choice.
