Jo Carolyn Mitchell was born on December 21, 1951, to Bessie Hicks Robertson and Charlie Hubert (Butterfish) Robertson. She was born and raised in Oxford, North Carolina; she passed peacefully at her daughter's home in Henderson, North Carolina, on October 27, 2026.

Jo was a long-time member of Hardie Grove Baptist Church as well as Oxford Garden Club. She often volunteered at both Oxford Head Start and Mothergoose daycares. Jo also had an avid green thumb; those who visited her home in Oxford would say she had one of the most luscious gardens. At church, she was a missionary, usher, sang in the choir, and was very involved in most church events. At home, she was a rock to her family and she would happily give you the shirt off her back. She was always the main host for every family gathering and holiday meal; no matter what was going on, you always knew you could go to her house.

Jo leaves behind two sisters, Mary Nelson of Oxford, NC, Diane Reed of Oxford, NC, and one brother, Charles Lee Robertson of Rocky Mount, NC; four daughters, Marie Harris of Gulfport, Mississippi; Evelyn Robertson of Durham, NC; Carol Faye Robertson of High Point, NC, and Cassandra Lee Ward of Henderson, NC. She also leaves behind one son, Stevie Robertson of Lauenburg, NC. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Whitney Harris of Gulfport, Mississippi; Brent Harris (Kiara) of Butner, NC; Eric Robertson of Durham, NC; Hakeem Robertson of Durham, NC; Maya Robertson of High Point, NC; Brandon Whyche of High Point, NC; Destiny Ward of Henderson, NC; DeAndre Ward of Henderson, NC; and Brian Satterwhite. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren as well as many friends and family, including cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jo is predeceased by her siblings: William Hicks of New Jersey; Eljer Hicks and Ruth Reed of Virginia; Lonnie Ray Robertson of Rocky Mount; James Hubert Robertson, and Larry Donnell Robertson.

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." Psalm 23

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." Revelation 21:4
