JoAnne DeWitt grew up the daughter of a farming family in the High Hill-Pine Grove community of Darlington, South Carolina. She completed grade school there and went on to attend and graduate from Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina to fulfil her dreams to become a teacher. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She was very thoughtful, compassionate, and loving with everyone around her. To mention a few things that she did:

She loved to read and write, and she was a free-lance writer and book author. She taught language arts and creative writing to students from elementary school to the college level. She even worked with inmates at the Federal Correctional Facility in Butner, NC. For many years she wrote on educational issues in newspaper editorials and in periodicals. In the 1980s, her research on the history of the Pee Dee, South Carolina area and the DeWitt family were responsible for a historical marker that was placed at DeWitt's Bluff on the Pee Dee River in Florence, South Carolina. She was also a writer and producer of the "Brain Game" academic quiz show for high-school students that appeared weekly on WRAL TV-5 in Raleigh, NC. In the mid- 1970's and early 80's, she ran a successful catering company. But more importantly, she was a pillar of our family. She loved to travel, to spend time with her family, to volunteer and help people in need.

She will always be remembered as an amazing and loving Lady.
