Karen Wehmeyer Gardner

Karen Wehmeyer Gardner, age 82, of Benson, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026.

Karen was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Nora and Marcus Wehmeyer. She graduated from St. Mary's High School before earning her degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. A gifted educator with a passion for mathematics, Karen dedicated more than thirty years to teaching, inspiring generations of students with her knowledge, patience, and encouragement.
In 1970, Karen married Gary Jay Gardner, and together they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and adventure. They first made their home in Dinosaur Acres before building the cabin of their dreams on Pecan Creek Road. There, they raised sheep, goats, and cattle while creating countless memories with family and friends. When they weren't tending to the ranch, Karen and Gary loved taking extended trips to the Rocky Mountains and Glacier National Park, where they found peace and joy in nature. Although they later moved to Missouri and eventually North Carolina to be closer to family, Karen remained a proud Texan throughout her life.

Karen will be remembered for her intelligence, quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family. Whether in the classroom, at home on the ranch, or traveling with Gary, she approached life with curiosity, determination, and a deep appreciation for the people and places she loved.

She is survived by her son, Scott Gardner (Amanda) of Benson, North Carolina; her daughter, Jenny Rucker (Joseph) of Garner, North Carolina; her cherished granddaughter, Lauren Rucker; her brother-in-law, Richard Gardner (Ann) of Houston, Texas; and many beloved nieces, cousins, and extended family throughout Texas, Ohio, and Maryland.

Karen's legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched as a teacher, the family she loved so deeply, and the memories she created with those fortunate enough to know her.
