LARRY KING LAWRENCE
June 22, 1938 – May 31, 2026
Larry King Lawrence, 87, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away on May 31, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Marion, North Carolina but his career took him to many different towns from the mountains to the coast.
While attending NC State University, he met the love of his life, the former Linda Ann Laxton, who was attending UNC at the time at a NCSU/UNC football game. They married in 1961 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November of this year.
After graduating from college, Larry joined the US Army and served in the Army Security Agency. He was proud of his years of service to his country and often spoke of that period of his life even in his final weeks. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Larry began his career in the US Forest Service using his degree in Forest Management and did so for 13 years. In 1977 he changed careers owning and operating a floor covering business in Camden, NC for the next 20 years before retiring and moving to Cary, NC to be near his family.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Linda Lawrence of Cary, NC; son, Jeffrey Lawrence (Sandy) of Cumming, GA; daughter Elizabeth Curtis (Grason) of Cary, NC; grandchildren: Peyton Lawrence, Sydney Miller (Tripp), Caleb Lawrence, Travis Lawrence, Zachary Curtis, Nash Lawrence, and Colby Curtis; great granddaughter, Pierce Miller; and brother Michael Lawrence (Kathy) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Larry lived the last 6 years in the Glenaire Community where he continued to enjoy reading, growing tomatoes, planning for and traveling abroad, and meeting friends for coffee and drinks. His love for the coast took him to Emerald Isle where he enjoyed surf fishing and did so as late as last year. All of his hobbies did not replace his love of family gatherings which were most lively when the entire Lawrence/Curtis clan were together.
A funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Cary, NC on Thursday, June 4th at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blood Cancer United (bloodcancerunited.org) or The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (foodbankcenc.org)
