Laura Baker Crook

Laura Baker Crook, 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the memories of a life well lived. Born in Kinston, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Frances Baker. Laura was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, cherished sister, and loyal friend whose kindness and warmth touched countless lives. Laura is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Joe; her sons, Ben and Michael (Lindsey); and her grandchildren, Josh, Jacob, and Alyssa. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Dodd; her nieces, Mary Frances Dodd and Anne Fuller Dodd (Kimberly Young); her Crook in-laws David (Kaye), John (Connie), James (Kim Karriker), Bryan (Donna), and Steve, and their children; along with a large extended family and many dear friends who will miss her deeply. A dedicated educator, Laura devoted more than 30 years to teaching math starting in Durham Public Schools, then at Broughton High School, and retiring from Middle Creek High School where she served as chair of the math department. Outside the classroom, Laura embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She always looked forward to spending time at the beach with her family. She enjoyed dancing with friends at SOS and could often be found joyriding on a sunny day with the top down on her convertible. Laura loved Christmas, especially the music, which she listened to year-round. Laura's strength was evident throughout her 17-year battle with multiple myeloma. Despite the challenges she faced, she met each day with courage and spirit. Her family extends its gratitude to Dr. Alan Kritz and Dr. Samuel Rubinstein for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided throughout her illness. Laura will be remembered for her generous heart, her devotion to family, her commitment to her students, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. A memorial service celebrating Laura's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, at The Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church in Cary.
