Laura Cade Brown

Laura Cade Brown was born August 4, 1981 in Winston-Salem, NC to Ron and Patty Brown. She graduated from the NC School of Science and Math in Durham, attended Duke University, earned a BA in Spanish at ECU, and a MA in Spanish at UNCC where she met her husband-to-be Greg Childs. Laura earned a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese Literature at Vanderbilt University. One of her professors described her as “a brilliant student, a hard worker and an original thinker”. As Laura completed her classwork at Vanderbilt and Greg was finishing his PhD in History at NYU, they were blessed with a daughter, Carolina, in November of 2010. The couple lived in Brooklyn before moving to Washington DC where Jamila was born in May of 2014 while Greg and Laura were teaching at George Washington University. They then moved to Boston in 2014 to teach at Brandeis University where Greg is an Assistant Professor and Laura was an adjunct professor before her diagnosis of glioblastoma. Laura maintained a positive attitude as she fought cancer but passed away on October 3, 2022. She is survived by her husband, daughters, parents, sisters Anna (Josh) Stein, Sara (Brady), Gardner, 2 nephews and 3 nieces. Laura was a blessing to her family, friends and the world.
