Leon Earl Gray, Jr., of Cary, NC, a devoted father, scientist, dog lover, and birder passed away on September 17, 2026. Son of Leon Earl Gray, Sr. and Opal McKusick Cox Gray, he was born in Bangor, Maine on September 29, 1945 and raised in Staten Island, New York. He completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell and later moved to the Triangle where he completed a PhD in Zoology at NC State. A world renowned toxicologist, he was a devoted research scientist at the EPA for almost fifty years. Highly regarded for his knowledge of phthalates and the effects of endocrine disruptors on reproductive biology, he published more than 400 scientific papers and spoke about his work all around the world. He was most proud of all those he mentored throughout his long career. Neighbors gathered for a memorial block party to honor him and share stories about his generosity, humor, and love for his family. He was a kind neighbor who loved all the dogs of Trinity Woods, especially his own beloved dog, Barley. He was an expert irreverent gift giver and found special joy in these gifts. It was also clear how proud he was of his kids and grandkids from the stories everyone shared. One neighbor commented it was remarkable how one individual could have such a profound impact on his community. He is survived by his children Kim, Clark (Beverly), and Jeff (Caitlin); his siblings Jackie (Mark) and Karen; and 5 grandchildren. He will truly be missed.
