Leslie J Shafer

Leslie “Les” J Shafer, 91, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Born in Oneonta, New York, Les was the youngest child of the late Guy L Shafer and Susan Rosecrans Shafer. He served proudly in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956 and went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling career in information technology with Bell Telephone Laboratories, IBM, and CDI Corporation before retiring in 2006.

An avid golfer, Les often joked that he only played on days that ended in “y.” He had a special fondness for animals and took great pleasure in every interaction with them. He was also a longtime Carolina Hurricanes season ticket holder, a lover of history, a fan of college football, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Les will be lovingly remembered by his son, James Shafer, and daughter-in-law, Tricia, of Fuquay-Varina; his daughter, Michelle Shafer, of Raleigh; his grandson, Matthew Shafer; and his former wife, Nettie Wyble Shafer, of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Shafer Fieg, of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

At Les’s request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or the Wake County SPCA in his memory.
