With love and deep sorrow, we mourn the loss of Marilin Jones Webb, age 96, who passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026. She was born in Georgetown, SC, to the late Benjamin Jr and Marie Jones, and was preceded in death by her brother, Carroll Jones, and grandson, Benjamin Pickett. She grew up in Columbia, SC, where she was active in the local Little Theater. Marilin moved to NYC in 1948 where she worked days for AT&T in the Empire State building, while taking night courses at Columbia University. She next worked from 1955-1965 as a technician at the Film Institute in Manhattan, NYC. In 1966, she moved to Tampa, FL, to become the Director of Media for the Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater School Districts. In 1971, Marilin accepted an offer from the State of NC to become the Director of Media for both the state government and public school system. She moved to Raleigh and worked from the new State Archives and History building. Located next to the General Assembly building, she surveyed the needs of NC citizens through direct talks with their elected representatives. In 1974 the GA amended statutes, using her idea to make Media Services available to the general public for small fees that subsidized the expansion of free services to public schools, libraries and universities throughout all 100 NC counties. She enjoyed the beach, dolphins, hummingbirds, key lime pie, reading, photography and writing poetry. She was a long time member of the Unity Church. Marilin is survived by her son Eric Webb (Carolyn) of NC; daughter Leslie Pickett (the late Danny) of VA; sister Leslie Tomey of VA; six grandchildren; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Cardinal Hospice team and Mary Beth, NP, for their compassionate care and support during her final days. Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed. May her soul rest easy and move gently with the ebb and flow of the sea. Arrangements are entrusted to City of Oaks Funeral Home & Cremations. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Dementia Society of America (www.dementiasociety.org).
