Michael Adrian Fuchs, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on January 9, 2023 at the age of 82, after a long battle with lymphoma and leukemia.

Michael was born on October 21, 1940 to Nicholas Fuchs and Margaret (Folk) Fuchs in Sedley, Saskatchewan, Canada. A lifelong academic, Michael studied in Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago, and New York, ultimately receiving his Doctorate of Education (EdD) from Teachers College at Columbia University. For more than 25 years he was a respected teacher, mentor, colleague and leader in the Department of Religious Studies at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Michael married Margaret “Peggy” (O’Neill) Fuchs in 1977. Their nearly 46 years of devoted marriage serves as a testament to their great love and respect for each other. While forever humble about his own accomplishments, Michael was immensely proud of his two children, Stephen and Lynn.

A long-time advocate for peace and social justice, he was an active member in Scranton Fellowship of Reconciliation and in his retirement moved to Knightdale, NC in 2006 to dedicate his time to urban and prison ministry and chaplaincy. Always an optimist, he approached life with playful humor and generosity. A voracious reader, his love for crossword puzzles, sharing jokes and the Yankees paled in comparison to the dedication and love he had for his wife, and the joy he shared with his granddaughters. Also known as “Eug”, “Peepaw” or just “M”, Mike left a lasting impression on countless friends, family and students. His simplicity, kindness and deep sense of service will forever remain guiding principles for his family.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joseph, and sister Kathleen (Wingerter). His memory is carried forward by his wife Peggy, children Lynn and Steve (Gauri Dixit), grandchildren Shivali and Anika, brothers Oswald, Aloysius, and Patrick, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to services which will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church (11401 Leesville Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613), on Tuesday January 17, 2023 at 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Catholic Relief Services (https://support.crs.org/) or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (http://www.lls.org).

The family would like to recognize the compassionate care provided by the team of dedicated nurses and physicians at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center.
