Susan Christie Whitt (Taylor), 56, born October 13th, 1969 in Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 18th, 2026, at Duke Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. Susan spent her childhood in Durham and went on to earn a degree in theater from East Carolina University in 1992. She then began her career as a props carpenter, where her creativity and craftsmanship reflected her love of the arts. It was at Syracuse Stage in 1997 that she met the love of her life, Robert. After years of friendship and a long courtship, they were married in Hawaii in May 2005 and built a life together filled with love, adventure, and devotion. Susan and Robert eventually settled in Bloomington, Indiana, where she dedicated 15 years to Indiana University, serving as a project manager in the Office for Research Administration.
In 2026, she returned to her hometown of Durham to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her father, Carroll Taylor, and her sister, Mary Foss. She is survived by her husband, Robert Whitt, her mother, Harriet Taylor (Meade), her brother, Jon Taylor, her sisters Stella Taylor and Karen (Daniel) Munson, as well as extended family and dear friends. Her beloved golden retriever, Barry, and cat, Quinn, will miss her dearly.
Outside of work, she found joy in sewing, nature, hiking, visiting botanical gardens, and delighting in feeding the colorful budgies at the zoo. She will be remembered for her intelligence, sense of humor, creativity, quiet strength, and the love she shared so generously. Memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA in her name, in honor of her lifelong compassion for animals.
